Kansas regents mandates clear policies on abuse
By Mara Rose Williams, The Kansas City Star, 12/29/11 –After the Penn state child sex crime allegations, Kansas Regents have demanded the six universities in Kansas to draft written policy for reporting child sexual abuse, making such reports mandatory.

This policy is necessary to prevent a situation like Penn State from ever happening at one of our campuses, said Ed McKechnie, the regents chairman who initiated the action. “It is our job to make sure that people understand that protection of children is primary,” he added.
Each school will develop its own policy, so policy may differ from school to school regarding who receives the report and who does the follow up. Kansas State University already has a policy in place with a reporting hierarchy. Yet, “we want them to know that the hierarchy is not as important as just reporting it,” explained Bosco, vice-president for student life, “we wanted it to be clear that if you don’t feel comfortable reporting to one person, then report it to another, but we want it reported.”
