Permanent Supportive Housing for Youth and More
By Wells Dunbar, Austin Chronicle—Permanent Supportive Housing project in Austin is looking to increase the amount of housing available to at-risk populations in the city. The project assumes that people will have better outcomes in various sectors of social services when they have places to sleep at night.
The strategy will introduce 350 units to serve anywhere from women fleeing domestic violence situations and youth aging out of the foster care system to the chronically homeless. A minimum of 225 of the units will go toward ‘frequent users of public systems’ like hospitals or even jails.
While 350 units may sound like a lot, it is a long way toward the over 1,800 units that are needed in Austin alone.
