Foster Children Begin Transition
(SUMMIT)-- For many youth in care, aging out of the system is a reality. Venturing out on one’s own can be intimidating, especially in the case of youth in care, because of lack of support and information.  “Get Connected,” a Florida based program offers a series of workshops directed at educating young adults who have aged out about personal relationship and workplace skills they may not have learned growing up; among the topics covered were conflict resolution and the different communication styles of men and women.

The program not only allows youth to network and gain new skills but also raises awareness among local organizations and businesses about the youths’ perspective of the aging out process. In short, members of the community are educated themselves about the challenges that former youth in care face upon reaching 18. The theme of the program is about moving the obstacles that these youth face in order to ensure their continued success in life.
